Monkeypox is a zoonotic illness caused by the monkeypox virus, which belongs to the Orthopoxvirus genus of the Poxviridae family. The virus is mostly found in tropical rainforests in Central and West Africa.

Now, monkeypox has spread around the world rapidly, through new modes of transmission. The outbreak has continued to grow, and there are now more than 16 thousand reported cases from 75 countries and territories, and five deaths. Last week, WHO Director-General declared that global monkeypox outbreak represents a public health emergency of international concern. Raising awareness of risk factors and educating people about the measures they can take to reduce exposure to the virus is the main prevention strategy for monkeypox.
